Buying a replacement key fob.
Choosing the right key fob for your vehicle.
Car keys are rapidly becoming a thing of the past because they’re being replaced with keyless entry key fobs that work with a variety of other car safety and convenience devices. Since each keyless entry remote is programmed to fit your exact car, a replacement key fob will need to be compatible with your car’s systems. A standard key fob has separate buttons for locking, unlocking, opening the trunk and a panic button that will sound your car’s horn repeatedly to alert others. Plus, vehicles that come with a built-in remote start system have a button on the car fob that activates the engine to warm up or cool down your car during the winter and summer months. If your vehicle doesn’t already have one, you can install a remote starter that comes with either one or two car key fobs, depending on the package you choose. Our Geek Squad® Agents can complete the remote start installation service and teach you how to use your car key fob. Additionally, some car remotes offer customized programming for functions like rolling down the windows, folding in the side mirrors and activating the back hatch.
Getting the most from your keyless entry remote.
When you’re looking for a car key fob replacement, a good rule of thumb is to get the same model you’ve been using by checking the model number on the back of the old fob. If you decide to try a universal key fob, make sure it’s compatible to ensure that it will work and has the same features, including operating range. Most key fobs have a range of at least 1000 feet to unlock your vehicle from inside your office before leaving work, or to locate your car in a busy mall parking lot. Once you factor in the cost of replacing your key fob and the annoyance of being locked out of your car, you might find it helpful to attach a Bluetooth tracker to your car key fob. This handy device allows you to use an app on your smartphone to quickly locate your keys. Not only can you use your car fob to start a car’s engine remotely, but you can also use one to communicate with your car’s security system, if you have one built-in. You can sound your car alarm from afar to remember where you parked, to call for help if needed, or to make sure that it’s on and actively protecting your car stereo, along with other valuables. Whether you’re looking for a universal key fob or other car accessories, we have a large selection available to browse at Best Buy.
